Learning goals

Student preparation

No advance student reading is required. Two self-contained research explanations inside the activity introduce the studies, concepts and methods. Students read these capsules as they work and return to them while answering.

The original papers and further reading are optional extension material.

Instructor setup

Work through the route you plan to assign and review the complete teaching guide, task keys and six-criterion rubric. Keep worked answers separate from student materials.

State the assigned tasks, exact stopping point, readable report format and submission destination in your course system.

Pacing and the assigned endpoint

Student completion time has not been measured. The inquiry includes source, data, decision and transfer work. Plan time for in-app reading, questions, analysis, writing and discussion. There is no fixed number of sessions: choose an endpoint that fits your class and allow local saving and continuation as needed.

For the complete inquiry, ask students to check the required measurement and water ledgers, pilot choices, rationales and final brief in their exported report. For an interim assignment, name the last required task and what to bring back to class.

Assign, debrief and assess

  1. Share the direct activity link and the assigned endpoint. Students use the in-app explanations; no journal article is a prerequisite.
  2. Preserve an initial prediction and ask students to explain a consequential choice using a specific case detail.
  3. Compare mechanisms and tradeoffs in the debrief. Ask for a rival account, an implication and a limit.
  4. Review the readable report using the rubric. Completion records participation; it does not automatically grade the quality of reasoning.

Use fictional roles and let students analyze a position without disclosing their own political beliefs. Grade evidence, mechanisms, comparisons and limits.

Student saving and submission

Use the activity’s local save controls and check its save message. Browser saving belongs to the current browser, device and website address. Clearing browsing data, private browsing or changing devices can remove access. Download a compatible progress JSON backup before leaving or moving devices, then check the restored record.

A progress backup resumes the activity. A readable PDF, text or HTML report supports assessment. Open the readable file, check the assigned work and upload it to your course LMS. Saving or exporting does not submit work to an instructor. Students should verify their LMS submission receipt.

Current teaching materials

Original source editions · archive downloads

These unchanged Frontiers source editions preserve earlier materials. The instructor PDF, student PDF and editable worksheet describe an earlier hosted workflow with online drafts, class codes or instructor controls. Those directions do not apply to this website. Use the current HTML guides above for setup, saving and submission, or print a current guide to PDF.

The original reading packet is optional extension material. No advance reading of the original papers is required.
